Known by the names of Banaras, Kashi and Varanasi, this holiest of holy cities of Hinduism is one of the most ancient cities of the world. It is the abode of Shiva and Shakti, who are known by the names of Vishwanatha and Annapurna. Most Hindus believe that passing on in this city ensures Moksha. Kashi is on the banks of the holy river Ganges (Ganga). A dip in river Ganges at Kashi is supposed to wash away sins.
The ritual baths at five of the holiest ghats-Assi, Dashashwamedha, Manikarnika, Pancha Ganga and Raj Ghat are ministered by Brahmin priests called Pandas, who also act as travel agents and make arrangements for pilgrims. Panda-pilgrim relations is known to have continued through generations. The larger Brahmin community of Kashi includes Pundits (scholars), Pujaris (temple priests), Vyasas (story-tellers) and Mahants (temple and religious establishment heads).
Kashi has always been a traditional stronghold of Brahmins and it is they who have preserved ancient Hindu ritualistic traditions and the Sanskrit language. Kashi is the home of Sanskrit Vishva Vidyalaya (University) and the Banaras Hindu University.
