Sir M. Visvesvaraya (1861-1962) who coined the phrase ‘ Industrialize or perish’, and who as the Dewan (Prime Minister) of the princely state of Mysore, was responsible for starting up several industries, in the early twentieth century, is considered as  the father of modern industry in India.
